A new Legend of Zelda game set in the same universe as the Super Nintendo classic A Link to the Past is coming to Nintendo's 3DS this holiday season. It was one of a slew of new games announced during Wednesday morning's online presentation from Nintendo.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata spent most of the presentation highlighting new titles coming to the Nintendo handheld later this year. Among the newly announced titles was a new Mario Partygame, Nintendo's multiplayer party-game franchise featuring popular Nintendo characters. The game is the first time Mario Party has ever traveled to a handheld system, and it will incorporate features specific to the 3DS for its minigames. The game will be out during the holiday season.
A new Yoshi's Island game is also coming to Nintendo 3DS. This franchise has you controlling the dinosaur Yoshi as he ferries a helpless Baby Mario across a treacherous island. There was no release date given.
The previously mentioned untitled Legend of Zelda game will emulate the top-down world of older 2D Zelda titles, but with several twists to take full advantage of the handheld's 3D capabilities. Link will be able to enter drawing mode to sneak along walls to uncover secrets.
Along with the new Zelda announcement, Iwata said two Legend of Zelda classics from the Game Boy Advance would come to the 3DS eShop: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons.
Other previously announced games got firmer release dates. Donkey Kong Country 3DS, a port of the Wii re-release, will be coming May 24 and will feature local co-op. A new Mario and Luigi RPG entry — Mario and Luigi: Dream Team — will arrive in the United States Aug. 11.
There were also a few Wii U announcements in the presentation. The Wii U will receive a system update next week to increase the menu speed between games, a flaw many players have complained about. It will also allow gamers to update software while playing other things or while the system is even powered off.
The Wii U's Virtual Console eShop will also be launching next week, giving players the chance to play Nintendo classics on the Wii U. Iwata also announced that the much-demanded Super Nintendo classic Earthbound was finally launching in North America "sometime later this year."
Nintendo's announcement was very 3DS focused, with many big titles coming to the system this year. With the Wii U getting very little attention, early adopters may wonder where the promised full launch-window lineup of games is.
What are you looking forward to from Nintendo's announcement? Let us know in the comments.
